The Colorado Youth Hockey Podcast
🎙️ WHY THE COLORADO YOUTH HOCKEY PODCAST EXISTS
Youth hockey in Colorado should be an incredible experience. It should develop better hockey players, create lifelong friendships, teach kids how to compete, and give families memories they will carry with them long after the final buzzer.
But somewhere along the way, it feels like we’ve lost some of that. Parents seem more frustrated than ever. Programs and coaches seem more frustrated than ever. And too often, both sides believe the other is the problem.
Programs feel that parent expectations have never been higher. More ice time. Better teams. Different coaches. More opportunities. Faster development. A clearer path to the next level. Programs are being asked to deliver more while navigating the difficult reality of evaluating players, building teams, developing hundreds of kids, and making decisions that will never make everyone happy.
Parents see it differently. They invest an enormous amount of time, money, and energy into their children's hockey experience, yet many feel decisions are increasingly political, communication isn't transparent enough, and opportunities aren't always determined by what happens on the ice.
The result is a growing divide. And we believe a big part of that divide comes from misunderstanding. That is why we created The Colorado Youth Hockey Podcast. It's Time to Have the Conversations
This podcast isn't here to attack hockey programs. It isn't here to bash coaches. And it isn't here to tell parents they're wrong. It's here to have the conversations that youth hockey too often avoids.
- Why do programs make the decisions they make?
- What should parents realistically expect from a youth hockey organization?
- How much should winning matter?
- What does development actually look like?
- Are politics really influencing opportunities, and if so, where does perception end and reality begin?
- What should coaches expect from parents?
- What should parents expect from coaches?
How do we handle tryouts, cuts, playing time, team placement, recruiting, development, accountability, and the pursuit of higher-level hockey?
And perhaps most importantly...how do we make Colorado youth hockey better for the kids playing it?
Tough Conversations. Different Perspectives. A Better Game.
We want to bring parents, coaches, directors, programs, officials, trainers, former players, and other voices from the Colorado hockey community into the same conversation. Sometimes we're going to agree. Sometimes we're not. That's the point.
Real progress doesn't come from everyone sitting in their own corner talking about what the other side is doing wrong. It comes from asking difficult questions, listening to answers we may not always like, challenging assumptions, and being willing to see the game from another person's perspective.
We believe parents deserve a better understanding of what happens behind the scenes inside youth hockey programs. We believe programs deserve a better understanding of what families are experiencing and why frustration has grown. We believe coaches deserve to have their perspective heard. And we believe everyone involved should be willing to look in the mirror and ask what we can do better.
The Colorado Youth Hockey Podcast exists to close the gap between programs and parents, bring difficult conversations into the open, challenge the way we think about youth hockey, and hopefully make a real difference in the game we all care about.
Tough conversations. Honest perspectives. Better youth hockey for EVERYONE.
